The special congressional panel on deficit reduction admitted Monday that there was no way to compromise their way to the budget cuts needed.
"It's almost as if we need people to give the government more money or something," said Senator Patty Murray from Washington.
While pondering how to cut trillions in spending over the next decade, the super committee kept coming back to the same question:
"Why don't the American people just give us more money to keep all of the programs they want?"
Someone foolishly looked at revenue-gathering structures from America's past, and was stunned to find that the government had previously gathered a lot more revenue from its citizens, particularly the rich ones.
"Did you know we used to charge the rich tens of percentage points more for facilitating their success?" asked Texas Representative Jeb Hensarling.
"And I just read a poll that said not only do a majority of Americans think the rich should contribute more, but a majority of millionaires do as well," said Senator Murray.
Furthermore, some noticed a corelation between past increases in government gathering and spending with leaps forward in education, scientific research, infrastructure and creating a robust American middle class.
"We now see the super committee's mission to cut spending was ridiculous," said Sen. Murray. "Go collect more money."
